We’re supporting Theodora Children’s Charity this Giggle Week!

Get giggling!

From 19 – 25 March, our friends at Theodora Children’s Charity are hosting the first ever Giggle Week: a week-long push to raise money for their Giggle Doctors, and spread a little cheer while doing it!

Theodora’s Giggle Doctors have a very important job. They go into hospitals around the country, bringing smiles to poorly children. A stay in hospital can be upsetting for children and their families, causing feelings of isolation, boredom and anxiety. A visit from a Giggle Doctor not only raises a smile, but helps to alleviate these feelings.

Over the last decade, the number of children under the age of 15 being admitted into hospitals across England has increased, climbing from 594,000 in 1999 to 739,000 recorded in 2010.

Currently, TCC’s Giggle Doctors are able to visit 5 % of these children. Last year, Theodora’s amazing Giggle Doctors brought 33,000 smiles to poorly children across England. The Giggle Week campaign aims to raise this to 43,500 by the end of 2019.

This isn’t just a ‘feel good’ story, either: research has shown that laughter can actually help us to tolerate pain and discomfort, and also reduce levels of stress hormones which in turn reduce anxiety and boost the immune system

“Laughter has also been shown to boost moods and help to connect people,” explained Emily Swords, CEO, TCC. “The Giggle Doctors may be interacting with one child and their family, but if another child is in the bay, they will be included too. We see families who have otherwise not spoken to each other, brought together by our Giggle Doctors. Being able to talk about this shared experience offers them a little respite in what is otherwise a challenging time.”

How can I support Giggle Week?

Giggle Week will be packed with activities and opportunities for people across the UK to show their support for the work the charity does, in a fun way.

The easiest way you can get involved and help raise awareness of Theodora is by ‘giving a giggle’ on social media. Share a short film, boomerang, or photo of yourself laughing on Facebook or Twitter. Remember to #GiggleWeek and @GiveaGiggle.

Think you know someone with the world’s best laugh? Share the evidence and let the power of social media be the judge. Not only will your giggles spread the word about Theodora, but this collection of giggles is expected to bring miles of smiles to young patients across the UK.

Of course, once you’ve shared your giggle, remember to donate too! Text ‘HAHA20 £3 to 70070 to donate £3, or go to www.theodora.org.uk/donate.

If you feel like being creative, there are loads of other ways you can raise money this Giggle Week. You could giggle while you…

  • Bake – hold a cake sale to share happiness and raise money

  • Dress down – get your colleagues or classmates involved

  • Work out – organise a fundraising exercise class
