The importance of a strong Founder brand to attract top talent

Startups rarely fail because the tech wasn’t good enough.

They fail because the story didn’t land.

The mission didn’t travel.

The right people didn’t join the journey.

At Luminous PR, we work with some of the most exciting early-stage tech Founders, helping them shape their narrative and amplify their visibility when (and where) it matters most. Like for example, when it’s time to attract and onboard those all-important early hires.

Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of joining the Future of Retail workshop – hosted by our partner Cooper Parry for its latest VentureCEO cohort.  Alongside the brilliant team at Emerald Technology, we explored two of the most powerful growth levers for early-stage Founders:

  • Founder-led hiring
  • Founder-led brand building.

The conclusion? It’s not just that these two levers work well together, it’s that, combined, they create serious impact.

Before you’ve got a team, you are the team

Founders know how to pitch their product. But pitching themselves as a leader worth believing in, following and building with is a different game entirely.

The reality is your first 50 hires will make or break your business. They won’t just shape your culture, they’ll define your trajectory. So when it comes to attracting the right people, no one is better placed to sell the mission, energy and vision than the Founder living it every single day.

As our friends at Emerald Technology shared (having helped over 500 scaleups hire across 160+ countries):

  • Founders should expect to spend 50% of their time on hiring in the early days.
  • Without a strong Employee Value Proposition (EVP), you’re at a disadvantage.
  • The best hires almost always come via warm networks, personal outreach and strong storytelling

But here’s the catch: Founder-led hiring only works if people know who you are and what you stand for.

“People don’t join companies. They join leaders.”

This is something we say often at Luminous and it’s at the core of how we approach early-stage brand building. In fact, during the workshop, our Founder Kirsty Jarvis put it like this:

“People don’t join companies. They join leaders, visions and missions they align with.”

Whether you like it or not, you (the Founder) are the brand in the early days.

Every LinkedIn post, podcast interview or press quote is building the perception of who you are, what you care about and why someone should trust you with their time, talent and in many cases, their future.

Some quick stats that tell the story:

  • Candidates now check over seven sources before deciding to apply.
  • Founders who post consistently about their mission, values and team see 30–50% better candidate quality.

Your personal brand isn’t fluff. It’s not about being an influencer, it’s about being visible, strategic and intentional. It’s about showing people what kind of mission they’ll be part of and what kind of leader they’ll be working with.

Brand + hiring = Compound growth

Here’s where it gets really exciting.

When Founder branding and hiring efforts are aligned, they do more than help each other, they create real momentum:

  • Your story travels → Your mission resonates.
  • Your mission resonates → You attract aligned talent.
  • You attract aligned talent → Culture gets stronger, faster.
  • A strong team and story → Investors take notice.

This isn’t just about filling roles. It’s about building confidence in your leadership, for your team, your board and your future partners.

What to do next – no matter where you are on your journey

Whether you’re pre-seed or Series A, these principles hold:

  • Build your EVP before your job spec.
  • Use your Founder voice online regularly and intentionally
  • Make LinkedIn a strategic tool, not a vanity project.
  • Vet every key hire yourself, even if it slows you down.
  • Celebrate the team wins externally and often. And do the same for the learnings too!
  • Treat hiring like growth – because it is.

You don’t need to be loud. But you do need to be clear, credible and consistently visible.

Final thoughts

We’re proud to collaborate with the forward-thinking teams at Cooper Parry and Emerald Technology, and it was a privilege to share the stage with them for this powerful session.

At Luminous, we believe your story is one of your strongest assets as a Founder and that telling it well can accelerate the right kind of growth.

If you want support shaping your narrative, building Founder visibility or aligning your brand with your hiring goals, we’re here to help.
